Economic Vitality

What is Economic Vitality?

Economic vitality refers to the overall health and strength of a community’s economy. It means having thriving local businesses, plenty of job opportunities, and access to essential services that allow residents to live comfortably and achieve their goals. At Seventy Five North, we believe that economic vitality is crucial for vibrant, sustainable neighborhoods.

Rooted in Community Prosperity.

Highlander, one of Omaha’s oldest neighborhoods, was once part of a thriving hub of economic activity. However, the effects of redlining, urban renewal, and subsequent decline took a staggering toll on the business sector. Our organization’s strategies are deeply influenced by the neighborhood’s economic resilience and vitality, as the success of our initiatives depends on achieving greater economic outcomes for residents. By forming strategic partnerships, supporting small businesses, and creating wealth-building opportunities, Highlander is committed to providing all residents with access to the tools, opportunities, and resources they need to achieve their economic goals.

Building Bridges to Businesses.

Following the establishment of Highlander’s mixed-income housing development, the neighborhood is uniquely positioned to support economic activity by connecting commercial tenants to neighborhood households. Highlander’s strong commercial core supports local, BIPOC, and women-owned businesses and provides essential services, creating a dynamic business sector. This intentional design ensures that residents have access to jobs, shops, and services right in their neighborhood while establishing Highlander as a destination for consumers from all over the Omaha metro.

Affordable Housing as Community & Economic Development.

Highlander’s mixed-income housing model drives economic vitality in the neighborhood in a dual-pronged approach. This approach not only ensures equitable access to safe, high-quality housing for residents but also supports the growth of their incomes. We recognize that many families often lose support as they achieve upward mobility, which can discourage career progression. Highlander’s mixed-income housing model is designed to counteract this by offering a clear, supportive pathway for residents. This system encourages upward mobility and wealth-building opportunities, such as homeownership, while fostering a supportive community where residents can thrive and achieve their economic goals.
